1. REP FITNESS Tricep Rope

GOLD MEDAL

REP FITNESS Tricep Rope

Our Ratings: 5

Comfort: 5

Durability: 5

Versatility: 5

Price/quality: 5

Rep’s tricep rope is the best tricep pushdown attachment, and it will make any functional trainer or cable machine more versatile.

  • Material: Nylon rope with plastic end caps
  • Length: 34’’
  • Weight: 1.78 lbs
  • Price: $$

This thick tricep rope is made of shiny black nylon and has plastic end caps. It is close to 34” long and weighs just under 2 pounds, which makes it incredibly lightweight. It’s not as manageable as you might think, because it’s a bit stiff once you first get it and it needs some breaking in.

The actual build quality is very good: the nylon is robust and high-quality, and combined with the plastic end caps, it gives a good grip during exercises and makes for secure, comfortable workouts. It seems like it can take a beating and you don’t need to be too careful with it. It won’t show any signs of wear and tear soon, no matter how many repetitive movements you make.

One of the main things you would expect from a tricep rope is versatility, and this one delivers. You can use it for tricep pushdowns, hammer curls, face pulls, etc., and it will adapt perfectly.  It works your arms, back, and core really effectively and because it’s so adaptable, you can get creative with your workout routines. Another great feature is the weight.

The rope’s lightweight nature makes it very user-friendly and easy to carry and store. Despite the rope’s many good sides, it has a problem with length consistency, or lack thereof. If you just get one rope, you’ll love it once you take some time to break it in.

However, if you want to get another one so you can use them together for a greater range of motion during tricep extensions, you’ll probably end up with two ropes that slightly differ in length. If you want to use two ropes, it would be better to find another brand that is a little bit more consistent with their manufacturing process.

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Lightweight
  • Durable

Cons

  • Inconsistent in length
  • Stiff before you break it in

2. RDX R1 Double Handle Gym Triceps Rope

SILVER MEDAL

RDX R1 Double Handle Gym Triceps Rope

Our Ratings: 4.9

Comfort: 4.75

Durability: 5

Versatility: 4.8

Price/quality: 5

If you can’t get your hands on our top pick, then this one is your best bet. RDX’s rope may not be the absolute best you can buy, but there’s no arguing that it is very good and deserves to be number 2 on this list.

  • Material: Nylon
  • Length: 24’’-25’’, 34’’-35’’
  • Warranty: Backed by quality assurance guarantee
  • Weight: 1.58 lbs (package)
  • Price: $$$

This rope for triceps has a user-friendly design and a large carabiner that easily attaches to various cable machines. It’s compatible with a lot of equipment and you can seamlessly integrate it into different workout setups. Another great thing is that it can withstand heavy weights without showing frays or any other signs of damage.

It’s made of thick, heavy-duty nylon and seems decently durable, but it’s not flexible enough to be as versatile as you would expect from a tricep rope. The nylon feels almost like plastic, so you’ll need to put some elbow grease into breaking it in. The ends are rubberized and comfortable, but they slip if you grab them with sweaty hands.

The included metal attachment clip is compatible with a wide range of cable sizes, which makes it adaptable.

Despite its minor drawbacks, this product is still one of the best tricep ropes you can find.

Pros

  • Quality attachment clip
  • Compatible with various cable machines
  • Good value for money

Cons

  • The ends slip when you grab them with sweaty hands
  • The rope is very stiff

3. YES4ALL Deluxe Tricep Rope

BEST BUDGET

YES4ALL Deluxe Tricep Rope

Our Ratings: 4.8

Comfort: 4.5

Durability: 5

Versatility: 4.8

Price/quality: 5

This is a heavy-duty rope for a cable machine that’s meant to enhance your triceps, biceps, back, shoulders, abs, and grip strength. It’s made of a combination of alloy steel, cast iron, black nylon, metal, and rubber.

  • Material: Alloy Steel, Cast Iron, heavy-duty black nylon, Metal, Rubber
  • Length: 27’’ or 36’’
  • Warranty: 1 year
  • Weight: 1.8 lbs
  • Price: $

There are two lengths available, 27’’ and 36’’, but we’ll be focusing on the 27’’ version. The rope is insanely robust and keeps its form even after intense workouts. The solid plastic ends at the extremities prevent any slipping, and although they’re not very comfortable to hold, the grip they provide is secure.

It has a universal design with a heavy-duty chrome-plated attachment and a stainless steel carabiner, so it’s easy to attach to various gym systems. The carabiner can support 880 lbs, which is remarkable. It’s compatible with home gym exercises, lat machines, ab machines, cable crossovers, and pulley systems.

However, it’s not the best for face pulls, because it just doesn’t allow you to spread your arms enough, which limits its versatility. The 27’’ option has 16.5’’ sleeve length and weighs close to 1.8 lbs. It’s very manageable and easy to handle, but if you don’t like it, you can return it within 30 days of acquisition. Another thing that’s important to mention is that the rope comes with a 1-year warranty.

All things considered, this rope provides good value for money. It’s very robust, durable, and affordable. It may not be as versatile as some other options, but you’ll probably really like it if you decide to give it a try.

Pros

  • Very robust and durable
  • The carabiner can support 880 lbs
  • 1-year warranty
  • Affordable

Cons

  • Uncomfortable grips
  • Not good for face pulls

4. ROGUE Tricep Strap

BEST TRICEP STRAP

ROGUE Tricep Strap

Our Ratings: 4.7

Comfort: 4.5

Durability: 5

Versatility: 4.8

Price/quality: 4.8

This strap is a different take on tricep training, and since it comes from Rogue, you can expect it to be good quality. They have a reputation of making excellent products, and these are the best tricep straps you can get.

  • Material: Nylon
  • Length: 29’’
  • Weight: 0.38 lbs
  • Price: $$$$$

The strap is made in the USA, features a 1.5’’ wide nylon webbing construction, and remains durable through any workouts. There’s also a welded D-ring that allows you to connect the strap to a lat pulldown or similar cable machine. The total length is 29”, while the handles are 8”. The latter are made of ¼ inch thick antimicrobial foam, which is a feature you won’t see often.

Antimicrobial properties are a huge plus when it comes to gym equipment, but not many brands include these types of materials in construction. The padding is not as substantial as the product picture would have you believe, and it would be great if it was thicker. With only 0.38 pounds, it’s extremely lightweight. You can throw it into any gym bag and take it anywhere — you won’t even feel it’s there.

Pros

  • Durable
  • Antimicrobial foam handles
  • Made in USA
  • Very lightweight

Cons

  • Not as padded as shown in the picture
  • Strains the wrists a little

5. GYMREAPERS Tricep Rope

GYMREAPERS Tricep Rope

Our Ratings: 4.6

Comfort: 4.5

Durability: 4.5

Versatility: 4.8

Price/quality: 4.5

Our list concludes with Gymreapers’ Tricep Rope, which promises superior muscle isolation and a range of grip methods to improve your workouts.

  • Material: Nylon
  • Length: 29’’
  • Warranty: 1-year replacement guarantee
  • Price: $$$$

Its best feature is versatility: this rope offers 5 grip methods that you can use to target specific muscles. The rope is made of nylon and has neoprene-padded handles that, according to Gymreapers, provides a comfortable grip. That’s not quite true, unfortunately, because the handles are not very comfortable as you would think, and they tend to dig into your skin.

Another issue is the stitching. It’s very neat and symmetrical, and Gymreapers says it’s heavy-duty. In reality, it’s pretty fragile, and the seams look like they’ll bust after using the rope a few times, especially if you’re doing intense workouts.

On the bright side, this rope attachment for the cable machine comes with an easy buckle for fastening and adjustment. It does a great job at making the setup process simple and quick, without the need to struggle with something complicated. In addition, there’s a durable D-ring attachment that’s made to seamlessly integrate with any cable machine or pulley system.

Gymreapers offers you a 1-year replacement guarantee, so if you happen to break or damage your rope, you’ll get another one for free. Since it’s not the most durable thing in the world, this is reassuring.

Pros

  • 5 grip methods
  • Easy buckle for fastening and adjustment
  • 1-year warranty

Cons

  • Weak stitches
  • Uncomfortable straps

What Is a Tricep Pushdown?

If you’re interested in building muscles in your upper arm, there’s a chance you already know what a tricep pushdown is. However, in case you don’t or in case you need a reminder, the tricep pushdown is a resistance training exercise that targets the triceps brachii muscle. It’s usually performed using a cable machine with a high pulley and a straight or a V-shaped bar attachment.

To do a tricep pushdown, you stand facing the cable machine, grasp the bar with an overhand grip, and position your elbows at a 90-degree angle. You then extend the arms down by pushing the bar towards the floor and engage your triceps to straighten the elbow joint.

You’ll notice that it is a very controlled movement, which results in effective isolation and contracting of the triceps that helps to develop and strengthen your muscles. The tricep pushdown is famous for its ability to isolate the triceps without engaging other muscle groups too much, which is why it’s so effective at sculpting the upper arms.

What Is a Tricep Rope Also Good For?

When you think of the tricep rope, also known as cable machine rope attachment, you probably think of the tricep pushdown, but it is a very versatile piece of equipment that you can use for other exercises as well. Its design with flexible ends and lengthier structure allows you to do a wide range of workouts that target various muscle groups.

You can use a tricep rope for face pulls, which is known for strengthening the upper back, rear deltoids, and trapezius muscles. And the best part: since you do them standing up, you’ll also engage your core, which will help with stability and balance.

If you attach the rope to a cable machine at face height, you can pull it towards your face and engage these muscles in a controlled manner. You can also use the rope to work on your abs, and one of the exercises you can do is cable crunch: anchor the rope at a high pulley and do controlled crunches.

Tricep kickbacks are another great choice and among the most effective exercises you can do, along with bicep curls and lat pulldowns.

5 Tricep Rope Types

Since it’s a rope, if you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all, right? Well, not quite. Tricep rope has a few different types so people of all fitness levels and preferences can find the perfect one.

1. Single Grip

This one is a classic: it has a single grip handle and a straightforward, traditional design. It’s excellent for tricep pushdowns and gives a comfortable grip during the extension movement. Its simplicity makes it versatile for other cable exercises that target the triceps, biceps, and shoulders.

2. V-Shaped

This one has a unique handle configuration that resembles the letter “V”, which is where the name comes from. This design allows for a neutral grip and provides an alternative hand position during tricep pushdowns and other cable exercises. If you’re after variety in tricep workouts, then a V-shaped tricep rope might be perfect.

3. Multi-Grip

With its multiple grip positions, this type of rope offers versatility when it comes to hand placement. Basically, it allows you to adjust your hand position for comfort and to target specific tricep muscle fibers. This rope is good for people who like experimenting with different grip angles.

4. Ball-Ended

A ball-ended tricep rope has rounded ends at the handle and provides a very secure grip during workouts. It’s the ideal choice for people who want a more ergonomic feel and improved control. The rounded shape also means there’s less chance of slipping during intense workouts.

5. Dual-Handle

Dual-handle rope introduces a dynamic element to cable exercises. It has two separate handles and is perfect for tricep kickbacks and face pulls. This rope allows you to engage different muscle groups with a varied hand position, which can make your upper body workouts more comprehensive.

6 Benefits of Using Tricep Ropes

Tricep ropes are a must in strength training, but their benefits are not limited to just building your muscles!

Benefits of Using Tricep Ropes

Isolating Triceps

Tricep ropes are flexible and allow for a smooth range of motion where your triceps carry most of the load, which means that they’re excellent for targeted muscle engagement and development.

Versatility

The best thing about tricep ropes is their versatility. Apart from exercises that focus on the triceps, you can use them for cable workouts, like bicep curls, face pulls, and ab crunches.

Less Strain on Joints

The design of tricep ropes helps minimize the strain on your joints. The controlled movements performed in these exercises, especially if they’re combined with ergonomic handles, help reduce the stress on your joints and make the workout more comfortable.

Engagement of Stabilizing Muscles

Tricep rope exercises are dynamic and engage stabilizing muscles in your upper body, including the core, shoulders, and back, so the exercises promote overall muscle development and functional strength beyond the triceps.

Cardiovascular Health

Elevated heart rate supports cardiovascular health, and tricep rope exercises are the perfect way to do that. Think about exercises like face pulls: their dynamic nature and rhythmic movement increase your heart rate, and they’re great for cardiovascular fitness.

Joint Flexibility and Mobility

Joint stress can cause a lot of issues, and tricep rope exercises help minimize it. The controlled, fluid motions that are part of these exercises can make your joints more flexible and contribute to their mobility. They are beneficial for everyone, but especially for people who want to improve the range of motion in the shoulders and elbows.

How to Pick the Best Tricep Rope?

Choosing the best tricep rope can be quite the process if you don’t know exactly what you’re looking for. Don’t worry, though, because here’s a list of all the factors you need to pay attention to that will make choosing your new rope a lot easier.

1. Material Quality

Start by checking what the rope is made of. You want it to be high quality, so go for durable nylon or braided ropes that can take the tension of these workouts and not get damaged.

2. Handle

Ergonomic handles are always a nice addition, especially if they’re padded with foam or neoprene. They will make your grip more comfortable and secure, and the rope won’t slip out of your hands as easily.

3. Cable Attachment Compatibility

Make sure that the tricep rope is compatible with various cable machine attachments. Your best bet is ropes with a universal attachment mechanism, like a carabiner.

Pro Tip:

Think about choosing a rope with a swivel attachment near the handles. This feature will improve rotational freedom during movements and reduce the stress on your wrists and elbows. It will make your workouts more comfortable and make the exercises more fluid and controlled.

4. Length

If you’re sitting there, staring at a screen and trying to choose 27 vs 36 inch tricep rope, the answer is: select the one that works for your height and allows for a full range of motion. Keep in mind that a longer rope can offer an extended range of motion.

5. Flexibility

Flexible rope allows you to do more dynamic movements and smoother motions. This way, you can target your triceps effectively without straining your joints.

6. Stitching

Pay attention to the stitching: it should be neat and symmetrical, and if it’s reinforced, you’ve hit the jackpot. Quality stitching will make the rope more durable and ensure that it can withstand the intensity of the workouts.

FAQ

How Long Should a Tricep Rope Be?

The ideal length depends on your height and preferences. Standard length goes from 27 to 36 inches. Go for a shorter rope if you want space efficiency, or a long tricep rope if you want an extended range of motion.

Is a Rope Better Than a V-Bar for the Triceps?

Both the rope and the V-bar have their advantages, so this one depends on your workout goals and personal preference. The tricep rope offers a lot of versatility when it comes to grip positions, and it allows for a fluid range of motion. A V-bar, on the other hand, gives a stable grip for focused tricep targeting.

Is Tricep Pushdown a Good Exercise?

Yes, the tricep pushdown is a good exercise if you want to target and strengthen your triceps. It’s excellent at isolating the muscles and promotes definition and overall strength in your upper arms.
